The object of the game is to caputre the opponent's King. This is accomplished by attacking the square on which the King resides in such a situation where the King cannot move into another square, either because it is already occupied or because it is covered by another of the opponent's pieces. It is not permissible for the King to move into a square that is covered by an opponent's piece. This is called moving into 'check' and is not permitted.
CHECK
The possibility of the King being attacked. When this occurs the player in 'check' must move to defend his piece either by physically moving the King, blocking the path of the attacker, or capturing the attacker.
CHECKMATE
If the above criteria cannot be met, it is declared a 'checkmate' and the game is over.
STALEMATE
This occurs when there is no decided winner.
